A bronze bust of Dimitar Peshev, deputy chairman of the
25th National Assembly, who played a decisive role in the rescue
of the Bulgarian Jews, was unveiled at the Palace of Europe on
Tuesday. The bust was presented by the Bulgarian delegation to
the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. It was
unveiled by National Assembly Chairman Yordan Sokolov and PACE
Chairman Lord Russell Johnston. The recognition which the
Council of Europe bestows on Dimiter Peshev is a recognition of a
remarkable page in the history of the Bulgarian people - the
rescue of the Bulgarian Jews from the Holocaust, said Sokolov in
his short speech at the ceremony. In his speech at the ceremony
Lord Johnston said that many people talk with readiness about the
observance of human rights but are not ready to take any risks in
their protection. Peshev was not one of these people. He risked
his career, freedom and even his life to save the Bulgarian Jews,
said the PACE Chairman. After the ceremony Peshev's bust will be
placed in front of Hall No 9 of the Palace of Europe. Author of
the bust is prominent Bulgarian sculptor Ivan Minekov.
